How To Prevent Your Storage Unit From Becoming Unorganized

Posted on: 15 July 2016

Self storage units come in all types of sizes, with some of them being no bigger than a small walk-in closet. Your goal may be to cram as much stuff as possible into the small space that you have, but without a plan for organization, you'll be unable to find something when you need to get it out of storage. That's why it is so important to prevent the storage unit from becoming disorganized. Follow these 2 tips to keep things in order.

Purchase Shelving

If you ever had to stack boxes on top of each other, you may be aware of what a mess it can be when you need to start looking through them. You move boxes from one stack to another, look inside a box, and then reshuffle boxes around as you need to make space to get to the next one. It can cause things to become unorganized when you need something.

A storage company will not let you install shelving on the walls, but you can still get some nice shelving racks that are easy to temporarily place in the unit while you are renting it. It will help to get shelves that have adjustable shelf heights, so you can make them the exact height of your boxes without wasting space.

You may lose a small amount of space due to the size of the shelf, but you will appreciate the convenience when you need to start looking for belongings.

Label Boxes With Colored Tape or Stickers

When you are moving dozens of boxes into a storage unit, you'll need an organizational system to help you find things when you need it. One method is to use a color coding system that uses colored tape or stickers. You can slap on an orange sticker for your Halloween items, or a red and green sticker for your Christmas items. Other boxes can also be organized by living space, with different colors representing your living room, dining room, bedroom, or other rooms in your home.

While you can also write these things on the side of your boxes, all of your boxes will start to look the same when you write on them all with black marker. Using some simple colored labels will easily help you identify boxes at a glance without having to read the contents of each box.

Having a small self storage unit should not be an excuse for the unit to be a mess. Following these tips will definitely help keep things organized.
